Rice, John K. (John Kirkland), 1896-

Born 1896. Enlisted 1916 and rose to rank of Sergeant while serving 10 months on the Mexican border with Company E, 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment, Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in October 1917 and assigned to the 36th Infantry Regiment. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant November 1917. Assigned to 5th Infantry Regiment in October 1919. Promoted to Captain in July 1920. Company Commander of the 5th Infantry Regiment, 1922-1924. Student and Instructor at the Infantry School, 1924-1930. Assistant Professor of Military Science at Lehigh University, 1930-1935. Promoted to Major, August 1935. Plans and Training Officer, Washington Provisional Brigade, 1936-1939. Commanding Officer, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 1939-1941. Chief of Staff, 38th Infantry Division, 1942-1943.

Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel (1940), Colonel (1941), and Brigadier General (1943). Served as Assistant Division Commander or Commanding General of the 35th Infantry Division (1943), the 78th Infantry Division (1943-1945), the 12th Infantry Division, Philippine Scouts, (1946-1947), and the 6th Infantry Division (1947-1948). Chief, Army Air-Force Troop Information and Education Division, 1948-1949. Chief Army Intelligence Corps, 1949-1951. Chief, U.S. Military Assistance Advisory Group, 1951-1952. Retired 1953.
