Anita M. Baldwin was the daughter of Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin (1828-1909), millionaire investor in Comstock mining stocks and later developer of the Santa Anita Rancho, which he bought from Harris Newmark in 1875. After Baldwin's death, Anita Baldwin inherited the ranch (including vineyards, orchards, livestock, and race horses), which she continued to run until selling several acres to the Los Angeles Turf Club in 1933 and most of the remaining acreage for subdivision in 1936.
