Soldier, U.S. Army; served in War of 1812, Black Hawk War, Florida War and Mexican War; commanded Western Department and later Eastern Department; at odds with War Department over frontier defense during most of his career.

U.S. Army officer, fought in War of 1812 and the Black Hawk War, sent troops to Texas in 1836 to protect settlers from indians, and was major general in command of the Western Department of the U.S. Army at the outbreak of the Mexican War.
Surveyor, lawyer, commissioned into army in 1799, eventually attained rank of major general in 1814.

Edmund Pendleton Gaines, army officer, was born in Culpepper, Va. in 1777.
Following years of service on the frontier and in the War of 1812, Gaines was promoted to brigadier-general in 1814. He later participated in the Seminole Wars, commanded the Eastern Dept. of the Army, and led a successful campaign against Black Hawk. Gaines was at odds with the War Dept. through most of his career especially in regard to methods of frontier defense. He died in New Orleans in 1849.
