Economist and reformer.
Henry George (1839-1897), political economist and social reformer, was best known for his book Progress and Poverty, in which he advocated economic equality through a single tax on land value. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor of New York City on a labor ticket in 1884 and died during his second mayoral campaign in 1897.
American reformer and single tax advocate.
Henry George was an economist, author, and politician. He is best remembered for advancing the theory of the Single Tax, based on improvements to community-owned land. His influential book, Progress and Poverty, was widely read and much discussed. He ran second in a close race for mayor of New York, and subsequently founded and edited the journal, "Standard," as well as publishing other monographs.
