Biographical History
Gibson succeeded Dr. Philip Physick as chair of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania in 1819. Between 1824 and 1850 he published 8 editions of his treatise, Institutes and practice of surgery. He also wrote medical biographies.
Surgeon of Philadelphia.
Gibson was Professor of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania during Hartshorne's attendance (1843-45).
