Biographical History

Born to Walter Chisholm and Anna Cook on January 18, 1879, Frank Pierce Chisholm (d. 1977) worked for over sixty years as a Northern Field Representative for Tuskegee Institute. Frank Chisholm was an alumnus of Tuskegee (1902), and was also educated at Atlanta University and Harvard University. He was active in civic affairs, serving as manager of the Tuskegee Jubilee Singers, and as a member of several prominent organizations, including the George Washington Carver Foundation and the United Negro College Fund. On June 1, 1910, Frank Chisholm married Helen "Lou" James, a graduate of Hampton Normal and Agricultural School. From this union two children were born: Helen Emily and Frank Jr. (the later died as an infant). Helen James Chisholm (1876-1971) studied agricultural science and taught abroad at The Kamehameha Schools (1901-1904) in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the Penn School (1907) on St. Helena Island, off the coast of South Carolina. After she married and moved to Saybrook, Connecticut, which became the Chisholms' permanent residence, Helen J. Chisholm focused on free-lance writing, and maintained correspondence with family, friends and former colleagues. Helen Emily Chisholm was born December 25, 1911, and was educated at Russell Sage College and Howard University, where she received her Master of Science in Psychology. She worked as a government employee in Washington, D.C., and taught at Connecticut College.
