Biographical History
In 1923, North Carolina State College’s (later North Carolina State University) Department of Physical Education was established upon authorization of the Board of Trustees. Ten department heads have led the program since its inception. In 2012, the Department of Physical Education changed its name to the Department of Health and Exercise Studies. Health and Exercise Studies currently works closely with the Departments of Campus Recreation and Carmichael Complex Facilities and Operations.
The primary mission of the Department of Health and Exercise Studies is to educate students regarding the benefits of living a healthy and physically active lifestyle; provide opportunities for sport, fitness and leisure, and professional preparation in the areas of coaching education, fitness leadership, health, and outdoor education and to serve NC State students, the University, and the community.
All students attending North Carolina State University (in 2010) are required to complete two Physical Education courses to meet the University General Education Requirement (GER). One course must be a Fitness and Wellness course (Fitness and Wellness courses are those found in the PE 100-level series). This collection documents the creation of this requirement, including early syllabi for PE 100.
