Biographical History

P.B. Marple recruited a band of forty men in Umpqua Valley to blaze trail to Coos Bay with avowed intent of colonizing that region. Group formed themselves into Coos Bay Company, each paying $250 for membership. Nineteen made first trip to Coos Bay. Some remained while others returned for families. Oregon pioneer, William G. Hill, described trip to Umpqua River to Coos Bay, Oregon (1853). Account mentions other members of party, countryside and various accidents.

From the description of "Trip to Coos Bay in 1853." (University of the Pacific). WorldCat record id: 34768256
