Rhode Island born journalist who wrote for the New York Times and San Francisco Bulletin before becoming editor of the Los Angeles Evening Express and owner of the Los Angeles Star (1837-77). He became a press agent for the Southern Pacific Railroad Company in 1879. (Hart, Companion to California, p. 528).
