The English portrait painter Thomas Phillips was born in 1770. He left school at age 13 to be apprenticed to a glass painter in Birmingham. In 1790 he moved to London to study at the Royal Academy. He was elected ARA (Associate member) in 1804, then full member of the Academy in 1808, and was nominated Professor of Painting at its school from 1825 to 1832. His sitters' book at the National Portrait Gallery in London lists 859 paintings, of which ca. 300 have been traced.
