Henry Francis Cary, British translator. He published translations of Dante in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and his work for the London Magazine in the 1820's acquainted him with many writers, including: Charles Lamb, William Hazlitt, Thomas De Quincey, Thomas Carlyle, John Clare, Thomas Hood, and Gabriel Rossetti.

Henry Francis Cary was a clergyman and translator, best known for his translation of Dante's Divine Comedy. Born into a military family at Gibraltar, he was educated at Oxford. Cary had published verse in several periodicals in his youth, but wanted to join the army; he finally acceded to his father's desire and became a clergyman. He held several religious posts, and wrote numerous articles for journals, but his chief work was his monumental translation of Dante into English, which became highly praised and remained the standard version for many years. Cary later translated works from Greek, Latin, and French, and had a long career at the British Museum.
