Lucius D. Battle was born in 1918 in Dawson, Georgia. He graduated with an A.B. from University of Florida in 1939 and earned his LL.B. from the University of Florida Law School in 1946. From 1942 to 1943 he was an Associate Administrative Analyst for the War Department, and from 1946 to 1949 served as a Foreign Affairs Specialist at the Department of State. He served as the Special Assistant to the Secretary of State, Dean Acheson, from 1949 to 1953, and from 1953 to 1955, he served as the First Secretary to the American Embassy in Copenhagen. From 1956 to 1964 Battle was the Vice President of Colonial Williamsburg, Inc. From 1964 to 1967 he served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Arab Republic. From 1967 to 1968 he was the Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs.
