He was literary editor at the American Freeman from 1923 to 1932 and music reviewer for American Mercury from 1930 to 1932. He also was a founder and editor of Panorama and an editor of The Reviewer. His works included biographies, books on literature and the theatre, and translations of novels, plays and criticism from Yiddish as well as major European languages.
