The Women's Trade Union League was established by Mrs Patterson in 1874. By the 1890s ten London Unions, and over thirty provincial unions were affiliated from Bookbinding, Shirt and Collar Making, Tailoring, Dressmaking and Milinery, Cigar Making Match and Matchbox Making, Ropemaking, Weaving, Laundry, Boot and Shoe Making, Silk Working, Upholstery, Lace Making, Pottery, Paper Making and Shop Working. The League was absorbed into the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in 1921.

Founded approximately 1875 as Women's Trades Union Provident League, the society subsequently changed its name to Women's Trades Union League, and in 1905 to Women's Trade Union League.
