Eilts, Hermann F. (Hermann Frederick), 1922-2006
Variant namesHermann Frederick Eilts was born in Weißenfels, Germany March 23, 1922. His family emigrated to the United States in 1926 and he grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Ursinus College in 1943 he served in the Military Intelligence Corps during World War II. After the war he attended the School of Advanced International Studies, receiving a masters degree in 1947, and subsequently joined the U.S. Foreign Service. He was appointed ambassador to Saudi Arabia October 20, 1965 and held the post until July 23, 1970. He was offered but declined the position of ambassador to Bangladesh on September 11, 1972. Thereafter he was assigned to lead the U.S. Interests Section in the Spanish embassy in Egypt. When the U.S. embassy in Egypt was reestablished he was appointed ambassador to Egypt March 19, 1974 and held the post until May 20, 1979.
After retiring from the Foreign Service in 1979 Ambassador Eilts became a professor of international relations at Boston University. He died October 12, 2006 in Wellesley, Massachusetts.
