Benny Andrews, African American painter and collage artist, was born November 13, 1930 in Madison, Georgia.

Benny Andrews (1930- ) was born in Madison, Georgia, attended Fort Valley State College from 1949 to 1950 and received his art training at the School of the Art institute of Chicago from 1954 to 1958. In addition to his art work, he has taught at several colleges, been the Director of the Visual Arts Program of the National Endowments for the Arts Foundation, and been an activist for African-Americans since the 1960s. He co-founded the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition in response the Metropolitan Museum of Art's 1969 exhibit, Harlem on my mind.
