Grenville Mellen was born in Biddeford, Mass. (which became a part of what is now the state of Maine), the son of Prentiss Mellen, U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Maine. He studied at Harvard College and Harvard Law School, and settled in Maine, where he practiced law and became a local orator and occasional poet. His poems and tales appeared in newspapers and magazines, with his first collection being published in 1833. He wrote Sad tales and glad tales (1828), under the pseudonym Reginald Reverie.

New England author Grenville Mellen attended Harvard College and Harvard Law School. As a practicing lawyer, he began publishing poems in various journals. He was also active as an editor.
