Third son of Pres. Rutherford B. Hayes; b. in Fremont, Ohio; graduated from Cornell University; trustee of Birchard Library, Fremont, an activity which he continued throughout his life; moved to Chicago, Ill., and then to Asheville, N.C., where he purchased a large tract of land and became involved in scientific farming, engaged in the promotion of the western North Carolina fair (held in Asheville), involved in several businesses, and was active in the development of Asheville as a resort and business center; later moved to Clearwater, Fla., where became involved in various business interests and the local Republican Party; married Lucy Platt.
