John Stephen, 1771-1833, came to New South Wales in 1815 and was appointed the first puisne judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1826. One of his sons, Alfred, 1802-1894, emigrated to Tasmania in 1824, and became a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1839 and Chief Justice 1844-1873. His brother, George Milner, 1812-1894, became Colonial Secretary of South Australia in 1839, and practised at the Bar in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.
