Shiels, William, 1849-1904
Variant namesWilliam Shiels was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1880. He was a noted supporter of women's rights, and in 1889 sucessfully sponsored a major divorce reform bill. Shiels served as Attorney-General and Minister of Railways from 1890-1892. He was the 16th Premier of Victoria, serving from 1892-1893. He remained in politics until shortly before his death in 1904.
