Chrétien Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes (1721-1794), surtout connu pour avoir défendu Louis XVI, succéda à son père à la tête de la Cour des aides en 1749. Il fut directeur de la Librairie de 1750 à 1763, secrétaire d’État de la Maison du Roi sous le ministère Turgot de juillet 1775 à mai 1776, ministre sans portefeuille d’avril 1787 à août 1788. Homme des lumières, ami des philosophes, il correspondit avec tous les savants de l’époque et fut lui-même dans les domaines scientifiques plus qu’un amateur.
