Daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Alexander) Stansbury, born in New York City, 1801. In 1827 or 1828 married William Kirkland. They conducted a seminary in Geneva, N. Y. and for a year in Detroit, later were among earliest settlers of Pinckney, Mich. Her first novel, "A New Home" (1839) was written under the pseudonym of Mrs. Mary Clavers. Several others followed. In 1843 the family moved to New York City. The death of Mr. Kirkland in 1846 forced her to support herself by teaching, acting as editor, and miscellaneous writing. When she died, Apr.6,1864, Peter Cooper, N. P. Willis, and William Cullen Bryant were among her pallbearers. Her son, Joseph (1830-94), was also an author. (from Dic. Am. Biog.) (blue index cards)
