Bent, Charles, 1799-1847
Variant namesPioneer merchant of New Mexico and first American civil governor of the Territory, 1846-1847. Virginia native and West Point graduate. In 1832, with brother William, established Bent's Fort in Colorado; then formed trading partnership with Cerán St. Vrain, operating in Santa Fe and Taos, N.M. Jan. 19, 1847 Gov. Bent murdered at his home in Taos by a mob resisting U.S. sovereignty. Manuel Alvarez, prominent Santa Fe trader and acting American Consul at Santa Fe, 1839-1846.
