Arthur, George, Sir, 1784-1854
Variant namesSir George Arthur was Superintendent of British Honduras from 1815 to 1823; and, as Governor of Van Diemen's Land from 1824 to 1836, is remembered for his system of convict administration and attempts to drive the Aborigines off the island. He subsequently held administrative appointments in Canada and Bombay, and finally returned to England in 1846.

1804 entered the army as an ensign, 91st Argyllshire Highlanders; 1805 lieutenant; c 1805-1806 served in the Anglo-Russian invasion of Naples; 1807 served in the Alexandria expedition; 1808 captain; 1809 participated in the Walcheren expedition; 1812 major; 1812 assistant quartermaster-general, Jamaica; 1814-1822 superintendent and commandant of British Honduras; 1824-1836 lieutenant-governor of Van Diemen's Land; 1838-1841 lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada; 1842-1846 governor of Bombay; 1846 made a privy councillor and promoted to major-general; 1848 DCL, University of Oxford; 1853 appointed colonel of the 50th (Queen's Own) Regiment; 1854 lieutenant-general.
