From the guide to the Scrapbook of letters from Ouida, with related material, ca. 1895-1928, (GB 206 Leeds University Library)

Ouida, pen name of Marie Louise De La Ramée, was born in England to an English mother and French father. She achieved publishing success early with short fiction, and graduated to consistently popular novels featuring extravagant adventure, melodramatic romance, and larger-than-life characters, culminating in the French Foreign Legion tale Under Two Flags. Her popularity waned, and she is remembered today more for her affluent and eccentric lifestyle than her writing.

From the description of Ouida letter to Messrs. Vanschauk, Gillender & Stairer, 1887 Sept. 28. (Pennsylvania State University Libraries). WorldCat record id: 54667706
