John Armstrong was a soldier, merchant, and land speculator. A soldier from 1776 to 1793, he was commandant at Forts Pitt and Hamilton, and participated in the campaigns of Harmar and St. Clair. After retiring from the army, Armstrong ran a general store near Cincinnati and speculated in land. He also served as Justice of the Peace in Hamilton County, Ohio, and as treasurer of the Northwest Territory.

John Armstrong, soldier and explorer, first served in the Pennsylvania regiments during the Revolutionary War and thereafter he was engaged in the protection and exploration of the Ohio frontier.

During this period, Armstrong served in St. Clair's Campaign (1791) and as commandant of Fort Hamilton which was established as a line of defense against hostile Indian tribes near present-day Cincinnati. Resigning from the Army in 1793, Armstrong settled near Cincinnati and served as treasurer of the Northwest Territory from 1796-1803.
