Chevalier was born in Russia and lived in Australia and New Zealand from 1855-1869; then from 1870 until his death he resided in England. He became a well known painter and lithographer of Australian and New Zealand landscapes, also working for the Melbourne, Punch and the Victoria Illustrated magazine.
