Alan Brownjohn, novelist, critic, poet, translator and editor, was born in 1931 in London, England. He graduated from Merton College, Oxford University, in 1953 and published his first collection of poems, The Railings, in 1961. He has continued to write and publish widely.

The Poetry Society, founded in 1909, is a membership-based and Arts Council England-funded, London-based organization which promotes the study, use and enjoyment of poetry. It publishes The Poetry Review and its membership is open to all. Alan Brownjohn was an officer, and served as chairman, 1982-1988.

Poet Alan Brownjohn was born in London and educated at Merton College, Oxford. He published his first book of poetry in 1961 and worked as a teacher before becoming a full-time writer in 1979. He has written poetry, reviews, and criticism, as well as two books for children.
