Born in Freeport, Illinois, Charles J. Guiteau was connected with the Oneida Community but later sued them. He was admitted to the Bar of Illinois but mostly worked as a bill collector. He was interested in law, theology and politics. He assassinated President James Garfield for which crime he was hanged in 1882.

Guiteau, a lawyer and supporter of the "Stalwart" faction of the Republican party which opposed President James A. Garfield, shot Garfield on 2 July 1881. The president died on 19 September, and Guiteau was convicted on 25 January 1882 and hanged on 30 June.
