Hearn, William Edward, 1826-1888
Variant namesHearn, 1826-1888, was born in Ireland. He was one of the four Professors appointed at the opening of the University of Melbourne in 1854, his field covering modern history, modern literature, political economy and logic. In July 1873 he was appointed Dean of the newly established Faculty of Law. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 1878, was a University Councillor 1882-1886, and Chancellor of the University May-Oct. 1886.

Hearn was an Irish-born economist and jurist, and taught a wide range of subjects as one of Melbourne University's first four professors. In 1878 he was elected to the Legislative Council.
