Gardner, Anthony Luzzatto, 1963-
Anthony Luzzatto Gardner (born May 16, 1963) was the U.S. Ambassador to the European Union. He was sworn in on February 18, 2014, and left his post on January 20, 2017. In that capacity, he was intimately involved in the transatlantic trade negotiations, as well as data privacy, digital economy, sanctions and energy security.
Ambassador Gardner has spent more than twenty years of his career advising on U.S.-European affairs, as a government official, lawyer and investor. Prior to his ambassadorship, he was Managing Director at a growth capital private equity firm based in London where he managed financing, legal and tax structuring issues related to the firm’s acquisitions and divestitures. Previously, Anthony served in senior roles at Bank of America, GE Capital and GE International, all based in London, as well as at international law firms in London, Paris, New York, and Brussels.
Ambassador Gardner holds a BA in Government from Harvard University, an MPhil in International Relations from Oxford University, a JD from Columbia Law School, and a Masters in Finance from London Business School. He is also a Managing Partner at Brookfield Asset Management, board member of Iberdrola S.A., and senior counsel in the law firm Sidley Austin LLP, where he works in the International Trade and Privacy and Cybersecurity areas. He is also a member of the advisory boards of the Centre for European Reform, the German Marshall Fund and the European Policy Centre.
