Schaffer's peers elected him freshman class president of the 105th Congress. He devoted his time to three House committees: agriculture, education and workforce, and natural resources, and was a sponsor and co-sponsor of many pieces of legislation. Bob Schaffer served three consecutive terms of office, retiring from the House of Representatives November 5, 2002.

Bob Schaffer served three consecutive terms of office, retiring from the House of Representatives November 5, 2002. He resides in Fort Collins, Colorado, with his wife Maureen and their five children, Emily and Jenny (twins), Justin, Sarah, and Mary.
