Ludwig Bemelmans was born in Meron, Tirol, Austria in 1898. He came to the United States in 1914. He attended schools in Austria before dropping out at age 16. He became a writer, illustrator, humorist, painter, and writer of books for children. He is best known for his stories about a little girl named Madeline, which has sold millions of copies in the United States. He died in 1962.
