Pierce was an entomologist at the Los Angeles County Museum (now the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County).

William Dwight Pierce, born in 1881, was one of the earliest students to graduate from the University of Nebraska's Department of Entomology and Ornithology.

From 1904-1931, Pierce produced several works on insect study and pest control. The majority of these works were published by the Bureau of Entomology in Washington D.C.Pierce later taught entomology at Glendale Junior College in Los Angeles, CA during the late 1930s. While there, he mentored prominent California entomologist Charles Anthony Fleschner.
