The Council on Foundations, located in Washington, D.C., was incorporated in 1957 in the State of New York for the purpose of providing consultative services to foundations in the U.S. and Canada. Substantial grants in 1958 from the Rockefeller Foundation and in 1960 from the Ford Foundation allowed the Council to begin full-time operation.
