Elisabeth Freundlich was born in Vienna, Austria. Her family fled Nazi Germany in 1938. In 1940, she emigrated to New York to work as a university lecturer and studied librarianship at Columbia University; in 1950 she returned to Vienna and worked as a translator and writer.
