American artist.
Elizabeth Shippen Green was born September 1, 1971, in Philadelphia, PA, and died there on May 29, 1954. Her illustrations graced the pages and covers of books and magazines for nearly sixty years. She is best known for her pen-and-ink work. At age eighteen she began drawing for the Philadelphia Public Ledger and for the department store Strawbridge and Clothier's advertising department. She also worked as a staff artist for Ladies' Home Journal and Harper's Weekly . After her marriage to architect Huger Elliot in 1911, she concentrated mainly on illustrating children's and young adult books, specializing in medieval subjects. She illustrated Charles and Mary Lamb's classic, Tales from Shakespeare, published in 1922.
