Herb Caen was a daily columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle for over fifty years, beginning in 1936, interrupted by a break for military service in World War II (1943-1945) and an eight-year stint at the San Francisco Examiner during the 1950s. He died of lung cancer on Feb. 1, 1997, at the age of eighty. Caen developed a writing style he dubbed "three-dot journalism," consisting of brief musings separated by ellipses.
