Court papers, 1722-1723, appeal against William Randolph's estate.

In April, 1722, the executors of the estate of two London merchants, Micajah and Richard Perry, brought action in the General Court of Virginia against William Randolph's estate, claiming that Randolph owed them over 3,000 pounds Sterling at his death in 1711. They also felt that they should be allowed to receive insurance and interest charged to his account, an accepted commercial practice. When judgement was made against the Perrys by the Virginia Court, they appealed to the King and his Council, an action not permitted for general verdicts. The author protests that such a rule invests supreme jurisdiction in colonial juries, leaving the British merchant at their mercy and removing jurisdiction from the King in Council to the detriment of the trade of the kingdom.
