Clarence A. Barbour papers, 1923-1943, (bulk 1926-1936).

Consists of primarily of correspondence dating from 1923 to 1943, although the bulk dates from 1926 to 1936. One group of letters documents Barbour's nomination and election to the Brown presidency. Other letters document miscellaneous subjects at Brown such as commencement speakers, financial affairs, and honorary degrees, although there is little detail about Brown in the collection. The collection documents the Barbours' travels. Clarence and Florence Newell Barbour traveled in India, China, Hong Kong, Burma, and Japan with the Appraisal Commission of the Laymen's Foreign Missions Inquiry from Sept. 1931 to May 1932. Clarence Barbour was a Commissioner. Most of the trip was spent in India and China. During the trip, Clarence Barbour wrote a series of letters to his secretary at Brown which include discussions of affairs related to Brown as well as descriptions of travel. Barbour often enclosed a second letter with the one addressed to the secretary; this second letter was intended for distribution to individuals on a mailing list. There are also several detailed letters written by Florence Barbour. This second, more detailed set of letters written by the Barbours, describe modes of travel, missions and churches, social conditions in India and China, and political affairs in China that were related to the war with Japan. Five typescript poems written by Florence Newell Barbour, titled, Sketches Oriental--Word Painted, are in the collection. One poem has the location Rangoon, another has Shanghai, typed at the bottom of the page. Florence Newell Barbour's work as a composer is not represented in the collection.

In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war".
