The bulk of these papers directly relate to his expeditions to the Caribbee Islands, the West Indies, the Arctic, Hawaii, Greenland, and the North Sea. There are lectures, writings, photprints, journals, notes, and correspondence for these trips. There is a small group of papers that concern his studies in Germany, as well as miscellaneous drawings and sketches.
