Barnaby Conrad Keeney papers, 1936-1980 (bulk 1940s-1966).

Consists of correspondence; manuscripts; speeches; notes; lecture notes and sylabuses; minutes; printed materials including clippings, programs, and serials; and a few photographs, dating from 1936 to 1980 although the bulk dates from the 1940s to 1966. The collection documents the career of Barnaby C. Keeney, especially his tenure as president of Brown University. Brown University topics documented in the collection include alumni and alumnae, admissions, athletics, the cooperative program between Brown and Tougaloo College, buildings and grounds, the Corporation, faculty, gifts and giving, the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, and scholarships. Files about organizations outside of Brown in which Keeney was involved include the Assoc. of American Universities; the American Universities Field Staff; the National Endowment for the Humanities; and the Commission on the Humanities. The Miscellaneous papers series includes manuscripts of papers written for publication, papers presented at professional meetings, and book reviews; some speeches and addresses given at Brown and at meetings of other organizations; remarks made by Keeney when he was a respondent to papers given at meetings of the American Historical Assoc.; and records pertaining to Keeney's tenure at the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Biographical records series includes documentation about Keeney's service in the U.S. Army 35th Infantry Div. from 1942 to 1945. Keeney was an interpreter for military intelligence and the files include some transcripts made by civilians, prisoners of war, and a member of the Hitler Jugend.

In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war".
