Diary, 1824.

Diary, 1824.

Entries document Gilman's voyage first from New London, Ct. to New York between Feb. 14 and Feb. 24, 1824 and then from New York to Dublin, Ireland and Liverpool and Manchester, England from Feb. 24 to June 7, 1824 on the ship, Anna Maria. Gilman records his observations of Ireland and England topically, offering comments about roads, greens, gas lighting, public buildings, poverty, churches, and city statues. Of particular note is Gilman's visit to the Herculaneum Pottery in Liverpool, where he saw and commented on the process of manufacturing crockery and porcelain. Allthough he characterized Manchester as smoky and gloomy, he did learn something of the production of silks, cotton, and calico goods imported to New York.
