Sherman Hall papers, 1831-1875.

Letters by Hall, a missionary under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, at La Pointe, Wisconsin, and its vicinity, 1831-1852, give data on the mission and on the customs of the Ojibwe Indians, with incidental references to the fur trade of the upper Great Lakes region. A letter written in 1853 concerns the establishment of a manual-labor school for the Indians at Crow Wing (Minn.). Letters from 1855 to 1875 relate to Hall's emigration to Sauk Rapids (Minn.) and to his subsequent life there as a farmer and as pastor of the Congregational church. They include also references to the Civil War, to the 1862 Dakota Conflict, and to general economic conditions.
