Convict pardon docket, 1887-1896.

The governor is given the power to pardon and parole convicts by the Alabama Constitution of 1875, Article V, Section 12. It is the duty of the secretary of state to maintain the "public records of the state," and "the records and papers belonging to the General Assembly." (Ala. Code, Title 3, Chapter 2, Section 73, Article 1 [1876]). This series consists of a pardon docket containing information relating to the pardon, restoration of political rights, or receipt of executive clemency for a crime. Information in the volume includes name of criminal, county, crime, conviction date, sentence, related newspaper clippings, date of parole or pardon, and any comments or recommendations of the governor. The entries are indexed by the name of the criminal. These documents relate to pardon records of the secretary of state and the governor.
