Studies on art and literature, ca. 1867-1876.

Lectures, essays, and notes in sixteen notebooks and one folder. Two notebooks are about art: "The Ideal of Beauty in G[ree]k Sculpture" and "Michel Angelo at Florence." The remaining material consists primarily of lectures on Greek literature, discussing its essence and its influence and using it to demonstrate the "fundamental Laws wh. govern Literature." Also included are notes on Honore de Balzac, Arthur Hugh Clough, and F.H. Myers. With two printed leaflets describing two series of a dozen lectures prepared for women on Greek literature and presented in St. Paul's Lecture Hall, Clifton and the draft of a poem on Cephisus (in the Pindar notebook).
