Brief reminiscences of the soldier's life on the plains and in the mountains during the early days of 1867-68-69 and 1870 / by Loren W. Aldrich, 1932.

Typed transcript of a memoir written by Loren Winfield Aldrich, prepared in 1932, possibly by Carl K. Aldrich. An editor's note identifies the name "Peter Van Doe" appearing in the text as a pseudonym for Aldrich. Aldrich discusses his experiences serving as a mounted infantry scout in Nebraska and Wyoming Territory at forts along the route of Union Pacific Railroad construction. He describes warfare with Sioux [Dakota] Indians, including a peace treaty concluded with Chief Red Cloud at Fort Fetterman in 1870, and relations with Pawnee scouts led by Major Frank J. North. Also discussed are protection of settlers, mail routes, and an exploring expedition in the Yellowstone region in 1870. Bound in are five blueprint copies of drawings by Aldrich.
