Theodore Thaddeus Sobieski Laidley was born in Guyandotte, Virginia April 14, 1822. He graduated in 1842 from the U.S. Military Academy and chose a commission in the ordnance corps. During the Mexican War his unit was at the following locations: Brazos Santiago, Texas, Tampico, Veracruz, Cerro Gordo, Jalapa, Perote, Puebla and Mexico City.
