This paper was presented at the 6th International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation in August 1997 in Himeji City, Japan. It presents an early history of synchrotron radiation which goes back to the 19th century. The file also includes correspondence from Herbert C. Pollock and Gerald Knowlton, photocopies of laboratory notebook pages (1947), and an affidavit regarding the origin of Synchrotron radiation signed by Knowlton in 1976.
