Boston State Hospital and its predecessors were responsible for providing residential care and treatment to mentally ill persons in the metropolitan Boston area from 1839 to 1981. The superintendent was in charge of the daily operation of the hospital. Monthly reports were submitted by staff of the various departments and used as a basis for montly reports submitted by the superintendent to the hospital's trustees (see Trustees reports ((M-Ar)336X).
